Biography
Damien Hirst (b. 1965) is a British artist and the leading figure of the Young British Artists (YBA) movement that emerged from London in the late 1980s and 1990s. Hirst's practice confronts themes of mortality, science, and belief through a body of work spanning formaldehyde-preserved animals, pharmaceutical-inspired installations, spot paintings, spin paintings, and diamond-encrusted sculpture—most famously "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" and "For the Love of God." Hirst rose to prominence through the 1988 "Freeze" exhibition and the patronage of collector Charles Saatchi, going on to become one of the most commercially successful and widely collected contemporary artists of his generation. His 2008 Sotheby's sale "Beautiful Inside My Head Forever," which bypassed dealers to sell directly at auction, remains a landmark moment in the contemporary art market. Hirst's work is produced across editions and unique pieces of widely varying scale and medium, making documented provenance and edition verification—typically cross-referenced against Science Ltd, the artist's production company—especially important to authentication. For collectors, Hirst represents a defining voice in contemporary British art and a work with established, if actively debated, market liquidity.
