Biography

Zao Wou-Ki was a Chinese-French painter whose work joined European abstraction with Chinese ink traditions, calligraphy, and landscape space. After moving to Paris in 1948, he developed an expansive pictorial language in which gesture, atmosphere, and light replaced conventional description. His paintings, works on paper, and prints move between lyrical abstraction and a sense of elemental space, often suggesting weather, energy, and movement without fixed imagery. Zao became a central figure in postwar international abstraction. For collectors, his practice offers a rare dialogue between modernist painting and East Asian visual traditions, carried by refined color, scale, and rhythm.
